March 16th, 2009fresno “free geek”
i have been thinking about starting a free geek like organization in fresno for some time and have even gone as far as registering the domain and creating a website for it (http://www.renewtech.net — free geek just seemed to… umm… geeky to me). if you dont know what free geek is, ill explain a little bit.
free geek is a non-profit organization who’s goal is take unwanted/outdated computers and either fix them up or recycle them based on the computer’s specifications. free geek is community ran, which means that volunteers provide all the work; in return they get to take a computer home after so many hours/builds. the org earns money to pay for rent, office supplies, etc… by recycling material, donations, and grant writing.
now, im not saying that fresno doesnt have a recycling program for this (i mean fresno was just named number 1 in the entire country for recycling), but no one does what free geek does within the central valley.
so to my point… a free geek like org in fresno would benefit a LOT of people in the central valley and so far i do not know of anyone who is interested in helping to get this thing going. so if anyone is even slightly intrigued, please feel free to contact me at info [at] renewtech.net or by leaving a comment below.
note: i will be adding some forums to renewtech.net soon; ill update this site when its posted.
